Soapstone Nativity

Soapstone, or kisii stone (named for the region where it is found), is a soft, smooth stone. Artisans in Kenya use a wet-sanding technique to carve these graphic black and white trinket dishes, dye them with natural dyes, then etch the design using simple hand tools.
